Understanding the Basics of Percentages
The word percentage comes from the Latin per centum, meaning "by the hundred". A percent is a fraction where the denominator is always 100.
Most basic percentage problems consist of three parts:
- Percentage (P): The rate or proportion.
- Whole (Y): The total or base amount.
- Part (X): The portion of the whole corresponding to the percentage.

Basic percentages are embedded in daily financial transactions, grading scales, and investments:
